There are several daily feeding shows, for the time please ask at the till station. Kids will love the touch pool.


The history of the institution goes back on the private museum of the pharmacist Theodor Loebbecke. He bought some older collections and science cabinets and gave his collection to the city 1901, and since 1904 it has been available to the public as Löbbecke Musem. The year after Düsseldorf Zoo (opened 1876) was a part of the city, and since 1930 a part of the museum. November 1944 the zoo and the museum were then severely damaged due to the bombs that should have hit the freight depot.The largest of the collection though was evacuated. To 1987, the collection was shown  then adjanced to the former site, in a bunker, until it moved in 1987 to the present building.

After paying the antrance fee the first stop is the adaptation of higher vertebrates to aquatic life, here we meet gentoo penguins. Going the steps we then look how the earth started 4 billion years ago and how water and land as we know them started. Afterwards its the storry on how life began, here we meet horseshoe crab. Then how the conquest of marine habitats did take part with moon jellys among others. Most beautyfull of the choral reef, shown next, here we also meet sharks like the whitetip reef shark. Of course every living beeing has to feed, this is shown in the next 12 tanks. Here we meet seahorses among others. The next room we look at how the hunter hunts for its food. Now again going on som stairs we meet the biotop freshwater, the rarest fish here is the to 1990 thought extinct tequila splitfin. Only 50 fish live in the wild in a lake 4 metres (13 ft) in diameter! The next room shows the hunters of the fresh water like the piranha. Body shape and biotop is the next rooms theme with strange animals like the South American Leaf Fish. The the next rooms topic is why some animals tend to live in a flock or swarm, like the neon tetra.  Then its about aliens in Central Eurpes fresh water, like the signal crayfish since the 1960s in Europe and since then killing the rare european crayfish. Lets now have a look at the tropical shores shown through a mangrove forest with mudskippers. Following the stairs and then turning right we look at arthropods and then how man uses the ocean. Here we find among others the octopus. After gundis we go inside the tropical hall with otters, crocodiles and Salvadori's monitor. Going outside again we look at animals from the tropical area like the brown wood turtle and the emerald tree monitor. Let us then have a look at amphibians in the next room and then reptiles in the following. Is the dessert alife? This is the question of the next room. Of course it is! Scorpions and gila monster called it theire home among others. Next we look at camouflage and warning and then we can look at the cute dwarf mongoose. Befor heading downstairs to the exit we the can look at the first collection collected by Theodor Löbbecke.
